Sustainability Specialist (Part-time / Contract)

  • Location: Rosedale, Auckland, New Zealand

  • Contract: 2 March – 30 April 2026 | 10 - 20 hours per week

  • Applications close: 5pm, 13 January

  • Start date: 2 March 2026

About the role

We’re looking for a Sustainability Specialist to play a leading role in delivering the 2026 Insights on Aotearoa New Zealand Sustainability Professionals research.

Established in 2020, this ground‑breaking research provides deep insight into the rapidly evolving role of sustainability professionals. The research is a collaboration between Oxygen Consulting, the Sustainable Business Council (SBC), Sustainable Business Network (SBN) and Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

Working alongside these respected partners, you’ll gain exposure to a wide range of industry stakeholders and have a unique opportunity to help shape new insights for the sustainability sector.

This role is also a strong entry point for someone looking to build a career in sustainability. While the focus is on the research project, there will be opportunities to shadow our consulting team, gain practical experience, and learn the fundamentals of sustainability consulting. There is potential for the role to evolve into a permanent part‑time or full‑time junior consulting position beyond the contract period.

About you

This role is well suited to a university graduate or current postgraduate student in Science or Finance/Accounting, with a strong interest in sustainable business and data‑driven insights.

You will also have the right to work in New Zealand and ideally be based in Auckland, with a preference for someone located on the North Shore, supporting our commitment to hiring locally.

Key responsibilities

You will be responsible for the analysis, insight development and reporting for the 2026 research, including:

  • Analysing the 2026 Insights on Aotearoa New Zealand Sustainability Professionals dataset and developing charts, tables and results (at aggregate level and by role typology) in Excel

  • Evaluating trends, patterns and connections across the 2020–2026 datasets

  • Developing clear, evidence‑based insights from comparative analysis

  • Building the draft 2026 Insights on Aotearoa New Zealand Sustainability Professionals report

  • Working with research partners to compare sustainability professional wellbeing data with broader New Zealand professional datasets

  • Ensuring all analysis and reporting is conducted with scientific and statistical rigour, and in line with our ethics requirements

Skills and capabilities

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Analytics & insight development: Confidence working with large datasets in Excel and the ability to identify patterns, connections and meaningful themes

  • Clear communication: Ability to translate complex findings into clear, accessible insights for a range of audiences

  • Strong organisation: Comfortable working to timelines and keeping multiple workstreams on track

  • Relationship building: Ability to engage constructively with a diverse group of stakeholders and perspectives

Why work with us?

Oxygen Consulting is an award-winning sustainability consultancy known for high‑quality, ethical work and strong client relationships. You’ll be supported by an experienced team, work on a nationally recognised research project, and gain valuable exposure to sustainability consulting in practice.
